HOW DO FIRE SPRINKLERS WORK?

Fire Sprinklers are individually heat-activated (not triggered by smoke). Most fires end up only activating one sprinkler head. When a Sprinkler reaches a temperature of 155- 175 F, the glass bulb will brake, releasing water to suppress the fire. Water flows to the Fire Sprinklers from the city similar to a sink or shower. In more rural areas, fire sprinklers can also get their water from tanks and wells.

COMMON FIRE SPRINKLER MYTHS?

1) Fire Sprinklers Cause More Damage Than a Fire

Fire Sprinklers react quickly to fires and prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of your home. Fire damage will be significantly less because of your fire sprinklers.

Fire Sprinklers produce 10 to 26 gallons of water per minute. On average only one or two sprinklers will be activated in the event of a fire. While some water damage will take place if the sprinkler is activated, it is significantly less water damage than if the fire department puts out a fire. Fire Department hoses produce 125 gallons of water per minute. By the time the fire department arrives the fire will consume more of your home causing the department to have to use more water, in more areas.

Fire Sprinklers will decrease both fire damage and water damage.

2) Fire Sprinklers “just go off”

Fire Sprinklers are individually activated by heat. This means that they go off one at a time, and only when they reach a high temperature. The chances of a sprinkler accidentally going off is 1 in 16 million. To prevent a sprinkler from accidentally discharging: do not put heating units next to the sprinkler, do not hang objects like clothing from the sprinkler, teach your children not to touch the fire sprinkler, and do not hang from or stand on the fire sprinkler pipe.

3) Fire Sprinklers are not aesthetically pleasing

Many people are concerned that Sprinklers are ugly. However, modern Fire Sprinklers have a low profile design, that blends naturally into your ceiling. They are less noticeable. Most designs have a cover plate making them mostly or competently flush with the ceiling.
